Compendium
A very warm welcome to “Myaree” at Myola Beach Houses
Welcome to “Myaree”, our beautiful cedar beach house nestled among the she-oaks and eucalypt trees. The inspiration for the name of our house has come from the environment that surrounds it. Myaree means “foliage” in Aboriginal language.
You have arrived in a very special part of Jervis Bay. Myaree is a stone’s throw to sparkling Currambene Creek and a short stroll to the beach, but here you feel like you are a million miles from civilisation! Myola is one of the quietest parts of Jervis Bay. On most days no-one else will be sharing the beach with you. When you feel like more action restaurants, shopping, galleries and sporting options are a short drive or ferry ride away.
We hope you love your time spent around the property. It is the perfect setting to do nothing but relax and rejuvenate. There are many cosy spots to unwind like the outdoor decks and the hammock, or simply inside in front of the fireplace. From the deck you will be able to watch the tides, abundant birdlife and curious wildlife. Kangaroos usually visit in the early morning and early evening. They are sensitive to noise and movement, so if you keep quiet and still, you’ll be able to watch and enjoy them for longer. The deck is also a great place to watch our local bird performance in the late afternoon. As the night settles in, look upwards and a canopy of stars will be winking at you.
If you are feeling active and adventurous there is plenty to do. Jervis Bay is fantastic to explore on foot, by kayak, boat, bike, or car. You can hit the beach, paddle or kayak on the creek, and walk or ride in the surrounding bushland. From Myaree there is a quiet road that takes you to Myola Beach and the Husky Ferry, and a paved pathway that takes you from Myola to Callala Beach. Each of these routes is perfect for a stroll, run or bike ride. The ferry stop is right next to the Myola Beach carpark (a short 10 minute stroll from the house). The ferry takes you across to Huskisson which has extensive water sports equipment available for hire, dolphin and whale watching tours, restaurants and cafes.
We are very happy to share this blissful place and our much loved beach house with you. Please enjoy, while treating Myaree with the same care as your own home. We are located in a serene little village and request that you respect our neighbours by minimising noise after 10pm.
Myaree is not just a warm weather haven. The cooler months are also a beautiful time to visit when snuggling up by the wood burning fireplace and enjoying a bottle of red (or two) is hard to beat.
If you would like to visit again with a larger group please consider “Metta”, our holiday home located right next door. Metta is a sprawling four bedroom cedar beach house which sleeps eight.
The following pages provide helpful tips for your stay at Myaree. Enjoy every moment.

Myola Beach Houses

The beach
Myola Beach has incredibly fine white sand and calm turquoise water and is only 800 metres from the house. You can stroll there in 10 minutes, cycle in 5 minutes, or drive in 2 minutes! Turn right into Catherine Street (the only other street in Myola), and follow the paved road through the bushland which takes you to the small car parking area alongside the beach. Once on the beach, the strip known as Callala Beach is in the direction to your left, and Myola Spit and Huskisson are to your right.
The creek
Currambene Creek (so named, but more like a river) is about 100 metres from Myaree. Head left to the end of Cartwright Street. It’s a beautiful clean waterway that’s great for fishing, SUPing, kayaking, boating, swimming and watching the most amazing sunsets, especially in winter. It’s very tidal and we recommend www.willyweather.com.au to access tide information. Don’t be alarmed when the tide is high to see it creep towards the back garden.
In summertime you can hire stand up paddle boards from the ferry stop, which is near the beach car park at the end of Catherine Street.
When fishing please obey local fishing rules as we are located in a marine park, and get yourself a licence online at www.service.nsw.gov.au
Dolphin and whale watching
Jervis Bay is famous for its resident dolphins and migrating whales. There are around 80 dolphins living in Jervis Bay. Local pods visit most days. Spotting dolphins is usually as easy as going to Myola Beach. There are also seals who come to rest on Myola Beach from time to time. More extensive dolphin and whale spotting cruises depart from Huskisson wharf several times a day. Whales migrate along the coast and often stop in the bay from June to October. Culburra and Point Perpendicular are excellent land-based whale watching locations.
Wildlife
Myola has lots of kangaroos and wallabies, echidnas, possums and beautiful birdlife. Wildlife will often wander onto the road, so please keep an eye out when you are driving. They will also visit you here at Myaree. We have a family of kangaroos who come by most days, especially around dawn and dusk. Sometimes during the night a possum may pay a visit. Our advice is to keep the louvre windows in the dining area mostly closed, or else a cheeky possum may attempt to open them! The local wildlife are naturally attracted to the grasses, native flowers and trees so please do not feed them, there is plenty for them to eat and they will visit without encouragement.
Husky Ferry
In the warmer months there is a ferry which departs from Myola taking a short 10 minute journey to Huskisson. The ferry stop is a 10 minute walk from the house, following the road along Catherine Street through the trees. The ferry stop is just before the beach car park. For the timetable see www.huskyferry.com or call Captain Dave on 0449 518 476. Huskisson is a great place to visit for restaurants and cafes, boutique shopping, a cinema, water sports, a public swimming pool, and the awesome Husky Pub. It’s also a great starting point for a cycle path culminating at Vincentia Sailing Club where you can enjoy a beverage outdoors on the grassy hill, often accompanied by live music. Bikes can be transported on the ferry.
Noise and neighbours
We are located in a serene little village. Please be respectful of our neighbours and keep noise to a minimum after 10pm. We are a strict no parties property.
First aid
We have a well-stocked first aid kit located on the shelving across from the main bathroom. There are essentials like bandaids and ointments for bites and stings. We’ve also included a small bottle of vinegar should you have a rare encounter with a jellyfish. We are surrounded by nature so please keep an eye out for spiders, snakes and ticks. The kit has information of what to do in the case of a more serious snake or spider bite. Apply pressure and bandage the whole area and phone 000 for an emergency. The closest medical centre is in Callala Bay (10 minutes away) and Shoalhaven hospital has an emergency department in Nowra (30 minutes away).
Fires and safety
Please be mindful of our bush setting and the summer bushfire season. There is a total fire ban all summer in the area and no outside fires are permitted. There is a fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen if required.
Please report all fires immediately by calling 000. In the event of a fire the safest assembly point is next to the creek at the other end of Cartwright Street. If Myola Road is passable, please exit safely to Callala Beach which has less bushland. There are 2 exits to Nowra from Callala Beach. Forest Road is more forested and in most cases the other direction via Pyree (clearly signed) would be less affected by fire. The Rural Fire Service website is an excellent resource for bushfire information and safety www.rfs.nsw.gov.au
Young children
We welcome children at Myaree and hope it is a place of special holiday memories for them. We ask that you keep careful watch of young children particularly on the decks, and do not place furniture near the rails. Please keep a watchful eye on young children at all times when playing around the property as there are natural hazards including snakes and spiders, and water hazards such as rising tides.
Parking
There is ample car parking at Myaree including the carport and driveway. If your party has a number of cars, please do not park on the gravelled road as it needs to stay clear at all times for fire brigade access. If you do park there, you may get a visit from a ranger! Instead please park any additional cars in the cul de sac at the north end of Cartwright Street (up towards the creek). It is your responsibility to be mindful of trees and branches. Please drive slowly on our entrance road which children and wildlife enjoy.
Gas
We use LPG gas. The tank should have plenty of gas for your stay. In the event that a tank runs out please switch it over. Feel free to call us for assistance on 0411 122 006 - Gavin can talk through the procedure with you. If you change the gas over without assistance, please let us know so we can order another bottle.
Should the BBQ gas cylinder require changing, there is a spare in the garage. Again please let us know if this occurs during your stay so we can be sure to order a replacement refill.
Electricity
We buy 100% green power. Please be mindful to turn off unnecessary lights during your stay. If you switch on the outdoor lighting, remember to turn it off when you go to bed, particularly for the benefit of our nocturnal friends.
Kitchen
Guests to Myaree often tell us how much they love our kitchen with the natural cedar benchtops and large dining area. We’ve tried to set it up generously and hope that you enjoy cooking here. If you think we are missing a crucial piece of kitchen equipment please do let us know.
Dishwasher
The dishwasher is easy to use and functions well. We find the dishwasher works best when it’s topped up with rinse aid which you’ll find under the kitchen sink. Please rinse or scrape your dishes, as seeds and stones can get caught in the filter and hose under the sink stopping the dishwasher from draining. Please stack the dishwasher before you depart on your final day and turn it on. Thank you.
Garbage and recycling
We would really appreciate you recycling all paper, glass, bottles, steel cans and plastics numbered to 5. Please remember not to put plastic bags in the recycling. Many local towns are now plastic bag free, in order to protect our local dolphins and marine park. The yellow bin is for all recycling. The red bin is for other refuse. Garbage collection occurs on a Tuesday morning. If you are staying midweek please take the wheelie bins to the grassy verge at the intersection of Cartwright Street and Arnott Lane as the garbage truck cannot make it down our small road.
BBQ
Please clean the BBQ after you use it. If every guest does this, then everyone benefits. If you leave the BBQ in a mess, it will attract an extra cleaning fee which we will pass on to you.
Fire & wood
When the weather is cool, the fireplace at Myaree is cosy and warm. We will leave firewood out for the evenings during your stay. If you would like to burn the fire for longer, Bunnings in Nowra has firewood for sale. The IGA in Callala Bay will sometimes stock small bags of wood during winter. Please be mindful when using firewood... stay warm, but don’t overfill the fire, the glass will blacken and you’ll miss out on the pure joy of watching a fire.
Tip: dry leaves and sticks are great fire starters, but newspaper is not good for the stove and pipe due to the type of ink used. Once the fire is going, shut the flue to keep the heat from escaping up the chimney. Our wood is fallen timber, not chopped down trees. Use only what you need. Please be careful with the fire and supervise your children as the stove gets very hot.
Spa
Enjoy soaking in our luxurious spa overlooking the trees. It is ideal for relaxing with a perfect view. If you intend on using the spa jet function, ensure the water level covers the jets. To activate the spa, press the button once. To turn it off, press the same button again. The jets are not on a timer feature. They will only turn off when you turn them off.
Supplies and local shops
Myaree has a coffee machine and we’ve provided you with a starter pack of pods. Extra Caffitaly or Map pods can be purchased from Woolies.
We have provided you with a starter pack of supplies i.e. detergent, dishwasher powder, toilet paper, tea bags, sugar, condiments etc. If you require more, the shops are not far away. At Callala Bay (10 minute drive) there is a well stocked IGA supermarket with ATM, a bottle shop, chemist and bakery.
There are a couple of casual dining options including a takeaway Chinese “Bingo” (Callala Bay shops) and an Italian pizzeria / pasta restaurant “Calabrisella Woodfired Pizzeria" (Quay Road, Callala Beach) offering dine-in and takeaway.
Further afield in Culburra (20 minute drive) there is a larger Woolworths.
Nowra is a thriving township (30 minute drive) where you will find supermarkets, large chain stores, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Check out Hyper Hyper coffee, recently awarded one of the 5 best coffee joints in NSW.
Farm gates in the Terrara/Numbaa area, 20 minutes away, sell local seasonal produce.
Hairdryer and iron
You’ll find a hairdryer in the cupboard in the main bathroom.
On the shelving opposite the bathroom you’ll find an iron and ironing board … if you are so inclined while on holidays. :)
Laundry and clothes line
There is a laundry downstairs at the rear of the garage. To access this area, enter via the door from the carport, using the key on the thong keyring to open the padlock. We have provided laundry detergent but if you need more you can get this from the IGA at Callala Bay. There is a retractable clothes line in the garage, as well as clothes lines under the house. Pegs are in the laundry.
DVDs, Games, Books
We’ve provided a generous collection of movies, board games and books for you to enjoy. Most of these can be found on the shelving outside the main bathroom. Please ensure all of these are left at Myaree when you depart.
Smoking
We kindly request that you do not smoke whilst staying at Myaree, however if you do feel the need, please only smoke outside and dispose of your cigarette butts thoughtfully and safely. There are butt bins in a basket on the shelving outside the main bathroom.
Problems or breakages
Please let us know if anything breaks or isn’t working so we can get it fixed for you, or our next guests, as soon as possible. Just phone or text Nicole on 0413 642 653. Any unreturned missing items and serious breakages through misuse will be billed. Should you have spills during your stay there are cleaning supplies under the sink (kitchen and bathrooms).
Checkout time
Checkout time is normally 10am on your day of departure, however if we don’t have guests arriving straight after you we’re happy to offer you a late checkout. We will let you know if this is possible when you check in. Unfortunately due to summer holiday popularity we are unable to extend checkout during summer.
Before you leave
Please put the last of your dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on, and take out your garbage and recycling. Please clean the BBQ.
Please leave the thong keyring in the kitchen where it was on your arrival, and ensure the key inside the key safe is in place.

Local surfing spots include Culburra, Seven Mile Beach & Shoalhaven Heads.

Local fishing spots are everywhere. One of the best is just 50m away in our backyard. Follow the track to the right at the back of the house. Make sure you have a license and read the catch rules for a marine park near the boat ramp.

There are boat ramps at Myola just down the road, Callala Bay and Woollamia. Callala Bay has a fish cleaning table near the jetty.
Art
-
The south coast has a rich history of art and artists (including this property which was formerly built-by and home-to five time Archibald finalist Noel Thurgate). Arthur Boyd is the most famous local artist and his beautiful property “Bundanon” is located just behind Nowra and open to the public on Sundays. The Bundanon Trust includes the Riversdale Education Centre, designed by Glenn Murcutt and definitely worth a visit.
-
Milton, Mogo and Berry are good places to start looking for local art. Shoalhaven Art Gallery in Nowra also features local emerging artists and regularly shows some of the incredible Arthur Boyd collection.
